The Best Dog Foods for Rottweilers

Written by: Bojana Radulovic

What’s the Best Dog Food for a Rottweiler?

Finding the best food for your Rottie’s age is far more important than it is for most other dogs.

That’s because Rottweilers are large breed dogs.

Which is not a concern for adult Rottweilers.

However, unlike adults…

Rottweilers puppies have an increased risk of developing a crippling and permanent form of the hip disease… if they’re fed a diet that contains too much calcium for their larger breed size.

Normal canine hips (left) and bilateral hip dysplasia (right)

Let me say this straight:

Only a limited number of foods meet these critical requirements.

For this reason…

The Barking Royalty has selected the 15 brands listed below because they contain calcium level considered safe for Rottie puppies… or adults. It’s very important to compare foods to help you find the best one for your dog.

A word of caution:

Some Rott puppies keep growing and aren’t ready to eat adult dog food until they reach 15 to 24 months of age.

The following dog foods are listed in random order. Each was chosen because it meets or exceeds our selection criteria.

The Best Dog Food for Rottweilers

Here are Barking Royalty’s best dog foods for Rottweilers for 2022.

Our little girl finds the chicken and sweet potato recipe yummy to her taste. Each time we set the bowl of food in front of her she doesn’t hesitate to start eating which has not been the case with other pricey dog foods. She is 32 pounds so the size of the bites are good for a medium or large breed dog. We will purchase this flavor again. We also purchased the beef and sweet potato recipe but have not yet opened the bag but feel certain she will like this flavor as well.

As an added bonus, she seems to be pretty happy eating it. Thanks Blackwood!

Review from Chewy customer:

When we first picked up our rescue puppy, the rescue itself asked us to feed him Wellness Puppy for Large Breeds. We were given a different puppy food when we got him at the foster home and we quickly saw he could take it or leave it. We also saw he was smaller than his siblings at different fosters, possibly getting different food. When we fed him the Wellness he ate as though he was famished. He can hardly get enough of it. We even are using it as his training treat. We are thrilled that he has caught up in size to his siblings. His vet said he is very healthy and to keep feeding him the Wellness. No argument from us. What a difference this food has made!!

Review from Chewy customer:

We switched our 6 month old puppy to this food, as he was experiencing some gas issues with his previous chicken-flavored food. I read that this formula should be easier on his tummy and to digest, so we went with it. He took to it right away, and loves it! Now he only has issues with stinky gas if he has special cheesy treats. Charlie would definitely recommend this food to all the pups out there with sensitive tummies! Also, his previous food had a smell to it that made me nauseous whenever I opened the bin to scoop it into a dish. This food does not have a super strong smell, which I love.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I switch or transition foods for my dog?

According to Dr. Pippa Elliott, you should gradually transition to a new food over a course of 7 days.

“There’s no big secret to switching foods. This is simply a matter of gradual change to let the gut bacteria in your dog’s digestive system adjust to the new diet.”, dr. Elliott explains.

Start by mixing 25% new and 75% old food together, then slowly increase the amount of new the next 7 days.

TimelineDirections
Days 1–2Replace 25% of old dog food with new.
Days 3–4Replace half of old food with new.
Days 5–6Replace 75% of old with new.
Day 7Feed entirely new food.

Do Rottweilers need to eat special dog food?

Adult Rottweilers can eat any high-quality dry or wet dog food. However, Rottweiler puppies should eat foods with safe amounts of calcium to lower the risk of hip and joint disease (hip and joint dysplasia).

You should also keep in mind that Rottweilers are prone to obesity (like many large dog breeds), so be sure to check the feeding guide every time you change dog food formula and take your Rottie’s activity level into the account.

Is my Rottweiler puppy ready for adult dog food?

It’s important to switch to adult food once your Rottie reaches maturity, but when is it officially an “adult dog”?

Rottweilers are still growing until they reach 15 to 24 months of age, so you shouldn’t rush with switching from puppy to an adult diet. Puppy food is nutrient rich and high in calories to support your puppy’s growth, development and high energy levels, and it’s important to provide your puppy with enough nutrients.

When to switch from adult to senior food?

According to American Veterinary Medical Association, larger breed dogs are considered senior when they are 5 to 6 years of age. Therefore, if your dog is older than 6, you should consider switching to senior food.

What causes hip and elbow dysplasia in Rottweilers?

There are several factors that lead to the development of hip and joint dysplasia in Rottweilers. Hip dysplasia is hereditary and is especially common in larger dogs, but other factors also play a significant role: excessive growth rate, too much or too little exercise, improper weight and poor nutrition.

It’s known that a high-calcium puppy diet increases the risk of permanent hip and joint disease.

How to reduce the risk of hip and elbow diseases?

There are two easy to implement ways to lower the risk of developing hip and joint diseases.

First of all, don’t overfeed your Rottweiler. This not only subjects dogs to a variety of health problems, but it also places more stress on their bones and joints, which can exacerbate problems like hip and elbow dysplasia.

Second, always choose foods that contain safe levels of calcium for your puppy. You have several great choices listed in this article.

How much should a Rottweiler eat a day?

To keep your Rottweiler happy healthy you should maintain an ideal weight. Start by reading the feeding instructions printed on the bag, and then adjust from there. Don’t forget to take your dog’s activity level into account.
